STEVENS: WHAT AN ACHIEVEMENT

20 April 2017

Defender delights in promotion success

It has been quite a season for Enda Stevens.

He was named the best left-back in the entire EFL and was also recently selected in the PFA Team of the Year for League Two.

And the Irishman – who has made more appearances than any member of Pompey’s current first team squad – even notched his first goal in a victory at Newport.

But all that pales into insignificance when compared to the best feat of all – securing promotion.

Stevens said: “It’s a surreal feeling and I don’t think that it’s really sunk in yet. It will probably take some time.

“But it’s an unbelievable achievement knowing that all our hard work has paid off and we’ve won promotion.

“It’s incredible to see how emotional people got afterwards and you realised just what it meant to them.

“To be part of that is fantastic and we’re happy that we could repay the faith that the fans have shown in us.”

Pompey needed to rely on Luton dropping points at Field Mill to ensure they won promotion on Monday.

Stevens said: “I heard a roar from the crowd towards the end and knew that Mansfield had either scored or it was all over.

“But we just had to focus on our game and knew that if we won then we would have a great chance.”
