POSH DRAW FOR ACADEMY

Woodward scores in 1-1 stalemate

Pompey Academy had to settle for a point after conceding a second half equaliser to Peterborough at Furze Lane.

The hosts started brightly and a looping header from Jordan Brooks came back off the bar in the opening stages.

And the deadlock was broken on 14 minutes when Kyle McDowell whipped in a fine delivery that was volleyed into the net by Sam Woodward (pictured) on the edge of the box.

But the Posh looked to hit back and Tommy Scutt was forced to clear from the line and preserve Pompey’s lead at the interval.

Peterborough did level just past the hour mark, however, with the ball tapped home after a shot had come back off the post.

The visitors then struck the woodwork again, while Woodward’s effort flew narrowly wide as the spoils were shared.

Academy coach Mikey Harris said: “It was probably a fair result, with both teams trying to play the right way in difficult conditions.

“We scored a good goal and conceded a poor one from our point of view, while there were more chances at both ends.

“And we probably shaded it in terms of the opportunities created, with Bradley Lethbridge coming on and lifting the ball over the keeper, only for the wind to take it just past the post.

“Harvey Bradbury then did well to steal the ball and go clean through, so he’ll be disappointed not to have finished.

“But it was a good overall team performance and there are plenty of positives that we can take from the contest.”
