POMPEY MOURN PAUL WENT

6 January 2017

Former Blues defender passes away

Pompey are mourning the death of Paul Went, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 67.

The former Blues centre-back was the club’s most expensive signing when he arrived from Fulham for a fee of £154,000 in 1973.

He netted six goals in 107 appearances during his four seasons at Fratton Park, also being used at left-back and even up front.

Went was popular with the Pompey fans, who named him their Player of the Year following his first campaign on the south coast.

But with the club suffering crippling financial problems, he was sold to Cardiff in 1976 for just £35,000.

Went also appeared for Charlton and Leyton Orient, and had a brief spell in charge of the latter.

Blues legend Alan Knight said: “Paul was an old-school defender and someone who commanded plenty of respect on the pitch.

“But he was also an extremely nice man off it and I know that he will be sadly missed by a lot of people.”

Everyone at Portsmouth Football Club would like to send their deepest condolences to Paul’s wide Trudi and all of his family and friends.
