COOK: WE GAVE FANS BELIEF

25 March 2016

Boss happy with Notts County victory

There has been a vastly differing mood after each of Pompey’s last two home matches.

Fans vented their frustration following the disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Newport a fortnight ago.

But the mood was far more upbeat among the Fratton faithful after a convincing Good Friday rout of Notts County.

Kyle Bennett’s brace and goals from Christian Burgess and Marc McNulty secured a 4-0 triumph for the hosts.

And Paul Cook was delighted that his side were able to provide another sizeable crowd with plenty to cheer.

The Blues boss said: “We’ve been trying to educate the players and you could see that we didn’t play in areas of the pitch that weren’t conducive to what we’re trying to do.

“That ultimately resulted in a fantastic team performance and a comfortable win for us.

“We had to lift the supporters because if we’d have lost, then they would begin to doubt whether we’d get into the play-offs.

“But instead they went home believing that we have got a good side with decent players.

“If you take the Newport result away then we are on a fantastic little run, but that game hurt me – nobody wants to get booed off at half-time.

“But it’s that hurt that drives you on. You don’t start sulking like babies when you get criticism.

“Now, with just eight games to go, we just have to keep believing in what we’re doing.

“I know that there are top performances within our group of lads and the important thing is we now try to put back-to-back wins together.”
