Pompey Swoop For Marquis

19 September 2013

Milwall striker arrives on loan, while Bird joins Hawks

Pompey have signed 21-year-old Millwall striker John Marquis on a one-month loan deal.

Meanwhile, fellow forward Ryan Bird has joined non-league neighbours Havant & Waterlooville for a month.

Marquis – who will wear the number 32 shirt for the Blues – is looking forward to pulling on a Pompey shirt for the first time.

He said: “I’m down here to do well and score as many goals as possible. It would be good to get a run of games and improve my sharpness.

“Pompey are playing some good football at the moment and I want to be a part of that.

“I’ve been down here twice before and sat on the bench, so I know all about the atmosphere at Fratton Park.”

Blues boss Guy Whittingham said: “We’ve had our eye on John for a while and we’re delighted to be able to bring him here.

“He’s a strong boy who can link play and run the channels. He provides some more competition for places in our squad.

“Ryan’s done really well in training and is a good character who will continue to train with us.

“But he needs to go out and play some competitive games and hopefully he can get on the goal trail at Havant & Waterlooville.”

Marquis has made one appearance for Millwall this season, coming off the bench in last month’s Capital One Cup defeat at Nottingham Forest.

He has scored a total of six goals in 48 senior appearances after progressing through the ranks at The Den.

Last season he grabbed an 89th-minute winner as Millwall shocked Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Bird joins Havant & Waterlooville just a couple of months after netting a brace against them in Pompey’s pre-season friendly at Westleigh Park.

Hawks boss Lee Bradbury watched him score during Tuesday’s abandoned friendly against Bournemouth.
