Mousinho: A Whirlwind Week

Boss discusses title celebrations and Lincoln test

26 April 2024

The past week has given everyone the opportunity to take a breath after what had been a hectic few days.

A dramatic floodlit victory over Barnsley saw Pompey secure promotion and the title, with the club’s end of season awards dinner taking place the following night.

The League One trophy was then presented after last Saturday’s clash with Wigan, providing a mountain of memories for all those lucky enough to be inside Fratton Park.

And John Mousinho is delighted that there is another chance to celebrate on Southsea Common on Sunday.

The Blues boss said: “It was a bit of a whirlwind week after everything that happened on the Tuesday and a huge outpouring of emotion.

“We then had the awards night before having to dust ourselves down and get prepared to face Wigan.

“The result aside, that was a brilliant day and being able to lift the trophy at Fratton Park was amazing.

“I think when things settle down, people will look back on those occasions with incredibly fond memories.

“It was a really special time to be connected with this football club and something to both savour and enjoy.

“We’ve also got the event on Sunday and that will allow even more people to be able to enjoy the celebrations.

“After the impromptu emotions against Lincoln and a more planned affair against Wigan, it’s nice that everyone in the city has the chance to share in our success.”

Pompey now have one final obstacle to overcome, as they make the trip to face play-off chasing Lincoln on Saturday.

Mousinho said: “It’s a shame we’ve only got around 1,000 fans who can travel up, but it’s just one of those things.

“It’s lucky that we didn’t need to go there and win to get promoted or secure the title because that would have been frustrating.

“But we want to be competitive in every single game that we play and so the side selected will definitely reflect that.

“Lincoln have got a huge amount to play for and it’s important that we protect the integrity of the league.

“Tom Lowery, Ben Stevenson and Terry Devlin have all been training – they’re fit and ready to go on Saturday.

“There are no new injuries and so it’s going to be difficult with so many players to choose from. Whoever we pick, we’ll be strong.”
